Windermere and the surrounding area offers something for everyone, here’s just a few suggestions to help you make the most of your stay…..
Walking
Walking is perhaps one of the most popular activities in the Lake District and there’s a plentitude of walks to suit every level of ability. In addition to our favourites, some of the best walks can be found here.
Cycling
Cycling is another popular activity, with lots of great cycle trails around the Lake District. Bikes can be hired locally at Country Lanes Cycles in Windermere (next to the train station), or venture a little further afield to the wonderful Grizedale Forest where bike hire is also available.
Horse Riding
Experience all the Lake District has to offer on Horseback, with Pony Trekking practically on the doorstep at Lakeland Pony Trekking – rides to suit every ability including a fell ride. There’s also Bigland Hall equestrian centre (where Anya used to ride as a child) a little further away (approx 12 miles from The Lady of the Lake), offering a variety of rides including full and half day fell rides.
Boat Hire
What better way to enjoy the Lake than by boat, either a Lake Cruise or hire a boat….enjoy panoramic views of mountains and a sense of freedom like no other. Lake Cruises are available from Bowness, Ambleside and Brockhole – visit Windermere Lake Cruises for booking and timetable information. Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre is great for Water Sports and summer holiday activities, and is just a stone throw away from The Lady of the Lake at the next jetty along. Boat hire is also available at Brockhole.
Sightseeing
An open top Sightseeing Bus will enable you to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and villages around the Lakes. Download the timetable and brochure for more information.
Shopping
Windermere and Bowness have a number of shops, including exclusive Gift Shops, Art Galleries and Grocery Stores. Booths Supermarket is great for groceries and local produce, there’s also 2 hours free parking.
Cinema
On a rainy day, or for something to do on a winter evening, there’s The Royalty Cinema in Bowness, a short taxi ride or 30 minute walk from The Lady Of the Lake. There’s also Zeffirellis Cinema and Pizzeria in Ambleside.
